color america: Our Home is in Heaven

In recent years, Asheville, NC, has become home to several hundred religious refugees from the former Russian states. Olga Kondryuk and her family arrived from Moldova in 2001. She is the first of her nine siblings to be wed in the United States. 

These pictures were made on her wedding day in September 2003 in Asheville, NC. 

  • Tatiana Kondryuk irons her daughter Olga's wedding dress on her wedding day in Asheville, North Carolina.  Olga, whos last name is now Lebed, is the first of 103 cousins from Moldova to be wed in the United States.
  • The wedding gown and bridesmaids dresses hang nicely by the window in the couple's new apartment.
  • Olga's bridesmaids, Oksana (left) and Tatiana, don the final piece of clothing, a traditional Moldovan scarf, for the wedding.  Oksana, Olga's younger sister, is not yet married.
  • A proud mother, Tatiana puts the finishing touches on her youngest duaaghter's outfit as another daughter assists.  The baby, Sabrina, was the first in the immigrant family born in the United States.  Now, it is the wedding day of Olga, the oldeste of Tatiana's 10 children and the first to be married in this country.
  • Oksana helps secure her big sister's tiara just before Olga ties the knot.  Olga's mother, Tatiana, is also ready to lend hand to her oldest daughter.
  • Olga and Mikhail Lebed, her husban-to-be, enter the front doors of the church and prepare to proceed down the aisle at the Cavalry Baptist Church in Asheville, N.C.
  • Olga, 19, and Mikhail, 20, receive blessings from the pastor and congregation during the Pentacostal ceremony.
